Counting Review — How Many Did God Make?

You Can Count to Ten!

This week you learned something amazing. You learned to count from 0 all the way to 10! Let us say all the numbers together:

Zero, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten!

You are a counter now! And counting is one of the most important things you will ever learn. It helps you know how many of something there are. God counts too — the Bible says He counts every star and knows each one by name (Psalm 147:4). If God thinks counting is important, so should we!

Review: Our Numbers and God's Creation

Let us remember what we learned this week. Each number connects to something wonderful God made:

  • 0: Before God created, there was nothing. Zero!
  • 1: God made 1 sun, 1 moon, 1 earth
  • 2: God made 2 great lights (sun and moon)
  • 3: The Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; Day 3 — land and plants
  • 4: Day 4 — sun, moon, and stars; a table has 4 legs
  • 5: Day 5 — fish and birds; we have 5 fingers on each hand
  • 6: Day 6 — animals and people; God said it was "very good"
  • 7: Day 7 — God rested; 7 days in a week
  • 8: 8 people saved on Noah's ark
  • 9: Only 1 out of 10 healed men came back to thank Jesus; 9 forgot
  • 10: God gave 10 Commandments; we have 10 fingers and 10 toes

One-to-One Correspondence Check

Remember our special counting rule? Touch each object and say one number. Do not skip any object. Do not count any object twice. One touch, one number — that is one-to-one correspondence.

Let us practice. Ask a parent to put between 0 and 10 objects on the table. You count them by pointing to each one. Then write the number on paper. Can you get it right every time?

Try this five times with different amounts. Each time, point and count carefully.

Counting in God's World

Now let us count things in God's creation! Look around you or look at a picture:

  • How many windows can you see? Count them!
  • How many trees outside? Count them!
  • How many people in your family? Count them!
  • How many books near you? Count them!
  • How many colors in a rainbow? (There are 7!)

God filled the world with things we can count. Every flower, every bird, every star — they can all be counted. And God knows the number of every single one.

Number Writing Practice

Now write each numeral from 0 to 10. Say the number out loud as you write:

  • 0 — round like an egg
  • 1 — straight line down
  • 2 — curve and slide
  • 3 — two bumps
  • 4 — lines and a corner
  • 5 — line down, belly, hat
  • 6 — swirl around
  • 7 — line across, line down at an angle
  • 8 — snowman (two circles)
  • 9 — circle with a tail going down
  • 10 — a 1 and a 0 side by side

Write them all in order: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Now try writing them without looking at a model!

Counting Games to Play

Here are some fun games to keep practicing:

Game 1: Mystery Bag — Put some objects in a bag (between 0 and 10). Reach in and pull them out one by one, counting as you go. How many were in the bag?

Game 2: Counting Walk — Go for a walk and count things you see. How many mailboxes? How many dogs? How many red cars?

Game 3: Clap Count — A parent says a number (like 5). You clap that many times. Then switch — you say a number and they clap!

Game 4: Number Hunt — Look for numerals around your house or neighborhood. Find a 0, a 1, a 2, all the way to 10. They might be on clocks, books, signs, or calendars.

Numbers Are a Gift from God

Did you know that animals cannot count the way you can? A bird does not know it has 2 wings. A dog does not know it has 4 legs. But YOU can count! That is because God made people special. He gave us minds that can understand numbers.

When you count, you are using a gift from God. Math is part of the way God ordered the world. Everything in creation follows God's mathematical rules — from the orbits of planets to the petals on flowers.

A Prayer

Dear God, thank You for teaching me to count from 0 to 10 this week. Thank You for giving me a mind that can learn numbers. You count every star and know each one by name. Help me keep learning and growing in math, because math helps me see the order You put in everything. Amen.

Hands-On Activity

Play "Counting Walk" with your family! Go outside and pick something to count — birds, flowers, cars, trees, or mailboxes. Each person picks a different thing. Walk around your neighborhood and count. Who found the most? Write down all the numbers you counted. Practice writing 0 through 10 one final time to celebrate finishing Unit 1!
