Fast and Slow — Tempo
"O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth." — Psalm 96:1
Music Can Be Fast or Slow
Yesterday we learned about the steady beat — the pulse of music that keeps going like a heartbeat. Today we are going to learn something exciting: the beat can be fast or slow!
Think about your own heartbeat. When you are resting quietly, your heart beats slowly: thump... thump... thump. But when you run and play, your heart beats faster: thump-thump-thump-thump! The heart is still beating steadily, but the speed changes.
Music works the same way. The speed of the beat in music has a special name: tempo.
What Is Tempo?
Tempo is how fast or slow the beat goes. It is an Italian word because many music words come from Italy, where a lot of important music was written long ago.
- Fast tempo means the beat goes quickly. Music with a fast tempo makes you want to run, dance, or jump!
- Slow tempo means the beat goes slowly. Music with a slow tempo makes you feel calm, quiet, and peaceful.
Let us try it:
Slow Tempo
Clap your hands very slowly: CLAP...... CLAP...... CLAP...... CLAP...... This is a slow tempo. It feels calm and gentle.
Fast Tempo
Now clap your hands quickly: CLAP-CLAP-CLAP-CLAP-CLAP-CLAP-CLAP-CLAP! This is a fast tempo. It feels exciting and energetic!
Moving to Different Tempos
Your body can move at different tempos too!
- Slow tempo: Walk very slowly, like you are walking through deep snow. Lift your feet carefully and place them gently. Slow... and... steady.
- Medium tempo: Walk at your normal walking speed. Not too fast, not too slow — just right!
- Fast tempo: Walk quickly, like you are in a hurry to get somewhere. Your feet move fast, your arms swing, and your body is full of energy!
Can you march slowly? Can you march quickly? The steady beat is still there — you are just changing the tempo.
Tempo in God's World
God created a world full of different tempos!
- Slow tempos in nature: A turtle crawling, a snail sliding, clouds drifting across the sky, a caterpillar inching along a leaf
- Fast tempos in nature: A hummingbird's wings, a cheetah running, rain falling in a storm, a cricket chirping
God made both slow and fast creatures. He made quiet, gentle mornings and wild, exciting thunderstorms. Our world is full of different tempos, and that makes it wonderful!
Tempo in Bible Songs
Different songs in the Bible would have had different tempos:
- A lullaby for baby Jesus would have been slow and gentle — soft and soothing to help Him sleep
- A victory song after God saved His people would have been fast and joyful — full of clapping and dancing!
- A worship song in the temple might have been medium — not too fast, not too slow — steady and reverent
When we choose the right tempo for a song, it helps people feel the right emotion. A lullaby should not be fast and wild. A victory celebration should not be slow and sleepy!
Practice Time — The Tempo Game
Let us play a game:
- Your teacher will clap at a slow tempo. Walk slowly around the room to match the beat.
- Your teacher will clap at a medium tempo. Walk at a normal speed.
- Your teacher will clap at a fast tempo. Walk quickly (no running!) to match the beat.
- When the clapping stops, freeze like a statue!
This game helps you listen carefully and match your body's movement to the tempo. Good musicians are good listeners!
A Thought to Carry
God made our world with many different speeds. Some things are slow, some are fast, and some are right in the middle. In music, the speed of the beat is called tempo. Learning to feel the tempo helps us become wonderful musicians who can praise God with joy!
