This lesson builds on knowledge from these prior lessons:

Seeing — God Gave Us Eyes

"The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them." — Proverbs 20:12

Welcome to Science!

Welcome to our very first science lesson! Do you know what science is? Science is studying the things God made. When we look at a leaf, listen to a bird, or watch a caterpillar — we are doing science! We are exploring God's wonderful world.

This year, we will learn about our five senses, plants, animals, weather, the sky, and how to take care of the beautiful world God created. Are you ready? Let us begin!

Your Five Senses

God gave you five special tools to explore His world. We call them the five senses:

  1. Seeing — with your eyes
  2. Hearing — with your ears
  3. Touching — with your skin
  4. Smelling — with your nose
  5. Tasting — with your tongue

Today we are going to learn about the first sense: seeing!

God Made Your Eyes

Close your eyes for a moment. What do you see? Nothing but darkness! Now open them. Look around the room. You can see colors, shapes, people, furniture, and light. All of that comes through your amazing eyes.

Your eyes are like tiny cameras that God designed. They take in light and send messages to your brain. Your brain then tells you what you are seeing. It all happens so fast that you do not even notice!

God designed your eyes with special parts:

  • The pupil — the dark circle in the middle that lets light in
  • The iris — the colored part around the pupil (your eyes might be brown, blue, green, or hazel!)
  • The lens — a tiny clear part inside that focuses the picture
  • The retina — the back of your eye where the picture forms

What Can Your Eyes See?

Your eyes can see so many wonderful things! Let us think about what we can observe:

  • Colors — red apples, green grass, blue sky, yellow sunflowers. God painted His world in beautiful colors!
  • Shapes — round oranges, tall trees, tiny ants, wide rivers
  • Movement — a bird flying, a squirrel running, clouds drifting
  • Light and shadow — sunshine streaming through a window, shadows stretching across the ground

The Bible says, "For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made" (Romans 1:20). When we use our eyes to look at creation, we can learn about the God who made it all!

A Closer Look

Scientists are very good at looking carefully. They do not just glance at something — they study it closely. This is called observation.

Let us practice! Pick up a leaf, a flower, a rock, or a pinecone. Now look at it very carefully.

  • What color is it?
  • What shape is it?
  • Is it big or small?
  • Does it have lines or patterns?
  • Is it smooth or bumpy when you look closely?

When you observe carefully, you notice things you never saw before! A leaf has tiny lines running through it called veins. A rock might have sparkly bits inside. A flower has delicate petals arranged in a pattern. God put amazing details into everything He made.

What This Teaches Us

  1. God designed our eyes — He made them so we can see His beautiful world
  2. Seeing is a gift — We should thank God for the gift of sight
  3. Careful observation — Looking closely helps us discover God's wonderful designs
  4. Creation shows us God — When we look at what God made, we learn about Him (Romans 1:20)

A Thought to Carry

Every time you open your eyes in the morning, remember that God gave you the gift of sight. Thank Him for the colors, shapes, and beauty you see each day. Even a simple flower shows us how creative and loving our God is!

Hands-On Activity

Go on a seeing walk! Find five things to observe closely: a leaf, a flower, a rock, a cloud, and an insect. Draw one of them in your notebook, including as many details as you can see. Thank God for giving you eyes to see His beautiful creation!
