God Made Sea Creatures and Birds
"And God said, 'Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.'" — Genesis 1:20
Day Five — Life!
For the first four days, God had been building a home — light, sky, water, land, plants, sun, moon, stars. Now it was time to fill that home with living creatures!
God spoke, and the oceans suddenly teemed with life. Tiny fish and enormous whales. Colorful tropical fish and deep-sea creatures with their own built-in lights. Dolphins leaping and sea turtles gliding. Jellyfish floating and octopuses hiding.
At the same time, God filled the sky with birds. Eagles soaring high, hummingbirds hovering at flowers, penguins waddling on ice, parrots calling from trees. Every kind of bird — from the tiny wren to the great albatross.
God Blessed Them
Here we see something new and beautiful: "God blessed them" (Genesis 1:22). This is the first time in the Bible that God blesses a living thing. He said to them: "Be fruitful and increase in number."
God wanted the seas to be FULL of fish and the skies to be FULL of birds. He didn't just make a few — He designed thousands of kinds, each unique and wonderful.
Think About This
- A whale's heart is as big as a small car
- A hummingbird can beat its wings 80 times per second
- A salmon can swim thousands of miles to return to the exact stream where it was born
- An eagle can see a rabbit from two miles away
Who designed all this? God did! Every feather, every fin, every amazing ability — God created it all.
What This Teaches Us
- God creates life — Living creatures are His idea and His gift
- God blesses His creation — He wants life to flourish and multiply
- God creates with incredible variety — Thousands of kinds of fish and birds
- God's creativity shows His glory — Each creature reveals something about its Creator
Unit 1 Review
This week we learned about the first five days of Creation:
- Day 1: God made light
- Day 2: God made the sky and separated the waters
- Day 3: God made land, seas, and plants
- Day 4: God made the sun, moon, and stars
- Day 5: God made sea creatures and birds
Next week, we'll learn about Day 6 (land animals and people!) and Day 7 (God rested).
"And God saw that it was good." — This phrase appears again and again in Genesis 1. Everything God makes is good!
