Mothers, Fathers, Brothers, Sisters
"Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you." — Exodus 20:12
Every Family Member Has a Role
Did you know that every person in your family has a special job? Just like in a team where each player has a position, every family member has a role — a special part to play. God planned it that way!
Let us learn about each family role.
Mothers
A mother is one of the most special people in the world. The Bible says a lot about mothers! In Proverbs 31, the Bible describes a godly mother. She works hard, she is kind, she takes care of her family, and she fears the Lord.
Mothers carry their babies before they are born. They feed them, hold them, rock them to sleep, and care for them day and night. When you are sick, your mother worries about you. When you are happy, your mother smiles.
God gave mothers a special kind of love — warm, tender, and protective. The Bible says, "As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you" (Isaiah 66:13). God's love is even compared to a mother's love!
Fathers
A father is a leader and protector of his family. The Bible tells fathers to bring up their children "in the training and instruction of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4). That means fathers have the important job of teaching their children about God.
Fathers work hard to provide food, clothing, and a home for their families. They protect their families and help their children grow strong and wise. When the Bible wants us to understand how God loves us, it calls God our Father — because a good father's love is strong, faithful, and steady.
Brothers and Sisters
If you have brothers or sisters, you have something wonderful — built-in friends! Brothers and sisters are called siblings. They are the people closest to your age in your family.
Sometimes brothers and sisters argue or get upset with each other. Even in the Bible, siblings had disagreements! But God wants brothers and sisters to love each other, help each other, and be loyal to each other. Proverbs 17:17 says, "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity." That means your brother or sister is there for you when things get hard.
If you are an only child (no brothers or sisters), that is okay! God gave you your family exactly as it is. You can treat friends and cousins like siblings too.
Grandparents
Grandparents are your parents' parents! Your mother has a mother and father — those are your grandmother and grandfather. Your father has a mother and father too — another set of grandparents!
Grandparents are special because they have lived longer and learned so much. They can tell you stories about when your parents were little. They can teach you things from long ago. The Bible says, "Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness" (Proverbs 16:31). That means older people should be respected and honored.
Honoring Our Family
The fifth commandment that God gave to Moses says: "Honor your father and your mother" (Exodus 20:12). To honor means to show respect, to obey, and to treat someone as important.
Here are ways you can honor your family members:
- Obey your parents when they ask you to do something
- Say kind words — "Thank you," "I love you," "Please"
- Help with chores around the house
- Listen when they speak to you
- Pray for your family members every day
A Curiosity Question: Why Do Children Look Like Their Parents?
Have you noticed that you might have your mother's eyes or your father's smile? God designed something called DNA — tiny instructions inside every part of your body. These instructions pass from parents to children. That is why children often look like their parents. God wove family resemblance into His creation!
A Prayer
Dear God, thank You for mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and grandparents. Help me to honor my parents and be kind to my whole family. Thank You for giving each person a special role. Amen.
