Families Work Together
"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor." — Ecclesiastes 4:9
Teamwork in the Family
Have you ever tried to carry something really heavy all by yourself? It is hard! But when someone helps you carry it, it becomes much easier. That is what teamwork is — working together to get things done.
God designed families to be teams. Every person in your family has a part to play. When everyone does their part, the family works well — like a machine with all its parts moving together.
How Does Each Family Member Help?
Let us think about how different family members work together:
Parents do many things to take care of the family:
- They go to work to earn money for food and clothes
- They cook meals so the family can eat
- They clean the house so it is a nice place to live
- They drive you to school, church, and activities
- They teach you right from wrong
- They pray for you and read the Bible with you
Children have important jobs too! Even if you are young, you can help your family:
- Pick up your toys when you are done playing
- Put your dirty clothes in the laundry basket
- Help set the table for dinner
- Feed a pet (with a parent's help)
- Be kind to your brothers and sisters
- Say "please" and "thank you"
These jobs that family members do at home are called chores. Chores are not punishments! Chores are ways we take care of each other and our home. When you pick up your toys, you are making your home nicer for everyone. When you help set the table, you are serving your family.
A Bible Example: Working Together
In the book of Nehemiah, the people of Israel needed to rebuild the wall around their city, Jerusalem. The wall was broken down, and the city was not safe. Nehemiah gathered all the people and said, "Let us rebuild!" (Nehemiah 2:17).
And do you know what happened? Every family helped! Each family worked on the part of the wall closest to their home. Fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters all worked together. Some carried stones, some mixed mortar, and some stood guard. Because everyone did their part, the whole wall was finished in just 52 days! (Nehemiah 6:15).
That is the power of teamwork! When families work together, amazing things happen.
Why Does God Want Us to Work Together?
The Bible gives us a beautiful answer in Ecclesiastes 4:9-12:
"Two are better than one... If either of them falls down, one can help the other up."
God made us to need each other. Here is why working together is better:
- We get more done — Many hands make light work!
- We help each other — If someone falls, another person can pick them up
- We learn from each other — Older family members teach younger ones
- We feel loved — Working together shows we care about each other
- We reflect God — Even God exists as a team: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!
Think about that last one. God Himself is a community — the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. They work together perfectly. When our families work together in love, we are reflecting what God is like!
Unit 1 Review — My Family
This week we learned so much about families! Let us review:
- Day 1: God made the first family — Adam and Eve. Families are God's idea!
- Day 2: Every family member has a role — mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and grandparents. We honor them as God commands.
- Day 3: Our homes are where our families live. God provides shelter for us, just as He gave Adam the Garden of Eden.
- Day 4: Families go through generations — grandparents, parents, children. The Bible keeps records of families because every person matters to God.
- Day 5: Families work together as a team. When everyone does their part, wonderful things happen!
"The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it." — Psalm 24:1
Your family is part of God's beautiful world. He placed you in your family for a reason. Treasure them, help them, and thank God for them every day.
A Prayer
Dear God, thank You for my family team. Help me to do my part — to pick up my toys, be kind to my siblings, obey my parents, and help with chores. Thank You that two are better than one. Help my family to work together in love. Amen.
